About

As a part of my academic career, I have advanced a broad research agenda.  In my first experience with independent research, I reported on international experiences with voucher systems in education.  Later that year, I would experiment with writing ethnographies as a part of study abroad experiences in Japan and France.

Upon returning from France in May 2008, my academic career really took off.  I accepted a position as a research assistant with Dr. Frank Williams, where I worked on a small team delving into the ethnographic record.  From this experience, I have developed my own paper on couvade syndrome-- the experience of physical symptoms of pregnancy in the male partner and/or the restrictions and rituals a man performs traditionally.  I continue to work with Dr. Williams on this and another project involving stature estimation.

At the same time, I took on an internship with Refugee Family Services' Family Literacy Program.  As an intern, I designed curriculum and lesson plans for ESL students, and turned in exceptional work which will continue to help tutors with their first lesson plans.  I also introduced testing to the program, integrating my research on education, values, and experience.  Testing of students not only allows the program to evaluate their work, but gives students a method of measuring achievement.  Finally, I worked briefly on a campaign to integrate RFS with the community.

In support of local transit, I have also created a video ethnography and researched trends in public transit use and abuse.  During a recent event, I ran a quick poll before telling individuals in the area about the event; I reported the findings to ACT Now where I hope that they can inform the direction of efforts to connect with MARTA patrons and other Atlantans.  I am currently working on a more informative video with members from ACT Now.  The original video ethnography will be found on the ACT Now web page, and at http://vimeo.com/10539632.
