Research and teaching interests include: experimental, avant-garde, and nonfiction theory and practice; community-based and subject participatory mediamaking; the essay film; video art; personal narrative and diary films; home movies and the representation of family; performance of masculinity; and the environmental documentary.
Niklas is an interdisciplinary artist whose award-winning experimental and documentary work has been exhibited in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. His most recent work, Environmental Champions, screened on the Olympic Green during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Niklas has been nominated for a Rockefeller Fellowship and is a current Board Member of the University Film & Video Association (UFVA). Before academia, he was a public television editor.
